Editorial photography refers to images that run alongside text in publications to help tell a story or educate readers.
An example of Editorial photography?
Fashion photography is a type of editorial photography that can tell a story without text. For example; fashion editorials in magazines can be multi-page spreads that depict a theme without words.
What does it often contain?
Editorial photography often contains aspects of portraiture and the use of props.
What does the model need to be?
The model needs to be extra!
How can products be used?
Products can sometimes be used in unusual ways by the photographer.
What has advertising, historically done?
Historically advertising sometimes crossed the line.
What role does advertising play? and what do we have today?
The whole point is to sell products to a changing consumer. Today we have inclusive advertising that recognizes its role in social change.
What does advertising reflect?
Advertising reflected the ideas of the time. Sometimes these ideas were sexist, racist, classist, and bigoted. These ideas change over time and as such there will be ideas in editorial photography that will be frowned upon by our future generation
