An abrupt or sudden transition.
Smash Cut
When we cut between two scenes happening simultaneously.
Cross-cutting or Parallel Editing
When you hear the sound of the next scene before you see it.
J-Cut
When the sound from one scene carries on to the next cut.
L-Cut
When you cut to a shot of the same thing, creating an erratic effect.
Jump Cut
When you cut from one shot to another and there is a visual similarity between shots.
Match Cut/Graphic Match
When lots of shots across lots of sequences are editing together in a creative style.
Montage
Editing technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.
Shot Reverse-Shot
When you cut from a shot of a character to their POV.
Eyeline Match
A mental phenomenon where the audience derives more meaning from the interaction of two back-to-back shots than from one shot in isolation.
Kuleshev Effect
An editing system used to maintain consistency of both time and space in the film.
Continuity Editing
A supplementary shot that “cuts away” from the main action to indicate something else in the space, such as an object or location.
Cutaway
When certain parts of a scene/sequence are omitted in order to imply a passage of time.
