Cut
one scene ends - next begins immediately
most common transition
sometimes the transition between shots is unobservable
Match cutting (simple continuity)
joins shots visually or thematically
eg door slams and another is opened in another scene
CUT TO CONTINUITY
- viewer should not be consciously aware of changing shots
- flow seamlessly
- fade in an uninterrupted manner
Cross cut (parallel editing)
complete change of screen - conflict/surprise
-noticeable cut
-builds suspense; create to parallel narratives
Jump cut
shots put together with little continuity
feeling of: tension, drama, violence, confusion
- smash cut: create sudden change in a visual image &/ sound
- fast cutting: joins shots of brief duration and conveys energy and panic
- cut away: a shot cutting away to a listener or an observer of the subject in the film to what is happening in the film
Noddy
reaction shot included in interviews, see the interviewer reacting to the interviewee
Fade in/out
indicate a passage of time
shot fades in from blackness or fades out to blackness
Dissolve
gradual transition - end of one scene is super-imposed on the beginning to the nest
can be gradual or swift when shotes blend into each-other
Superimposition
both the old and the new scene appear on the screen simultaneously
placing of one shot or a subtitle over another
Wipe
one scene appears to wipe another scene off of the screen along a visible line
Flipover
new scene appears to come in on the “back” of its predecessor
Montage
french word for editing
a sequence in a film where the plot is rapidly advanced by means of a number of shots join in a rapid succession
eg convey the passing of time often accompanied by music
Narrative montage
sequence determined by action and dialogue
Expressive montage
the order in which the shots are joined is meant to penetrate the surface of immediate “reality” and reveal deeper truths
- flash back: movement back in time
- flash forward: movement forward in time
- freeze frame: a frame is isolated and frozen (appears most like a photograph)
