Jump cut

A

shots put together with little continuity
feeling of: tension, drama, violence, confusion

  • smash cut: create sudden change in a visual image &/ sound
  • fast cutting: joins shots of brief duration and conveys energy and panic
  • cut away: a shot cutting away to a listener or an observer of the subject in the film to what is happening in the film

A

the order in which the shots are joined is meant to penetrate the surface of immediate “reality” and reveal deeper truths

  • flash back: movement back in time
  • flash forward: movement forward in time
  • freeze frame: a frame is isolated and frozen (appears most like a photograph)
