What happens when something is Cut?
The shot goes straight into the next one
When are Cuts usually used?
When the scene shows continuous action, or one short space of time
What is a Cross dissolve or Cross fade?
The shots dissolve into each other (one image gets weaker while the next shot gets stronger)
When are Cross fades usually used?
You can use these to show that you’ve left out a short space of time, or part of a journey
What is a Fade out?
The screen turns to black
When is a Fade out usually used?
To show the end of a scene or a period of time has passed
What is a Split edit?
Where the sound changes at a different time from the picture
When are Spit edits usually used?
When you cut between shots of each character
What is a Jump cut?
Where some frames are taken out of a sequence
Whare are Jump cuts usually used?
In scenes to create a fast pace and build tension
What is a Montage?
The idea that a single shot has meaning only in relation to another shot
Where are Montages usually used?
To create suspense and to create a bigger meaning behind a singular shot
What is Parallel editing?
Where cutting occurs between two or more related actions happening at the same time in two separate locations or different points in time
When is Parallel editing used?
In scenes of action and tension
What is a Wipe?
When one scene erases the previous scene and replaces it on screen
