film editing
editing is a post- production technique in which the footage shit during production is cut up and reassembled in such a way as to tell the story.
syntagmatic connotation
the implied meaning of shots put together
spatial relationships
the juxtaposition of shots within a scene can cause us to have a fairly complex sense of that overall space. thus, painting a mental picture of the space of a scene.
temporal relationships
editing is used to manipulate the presentation of plot time onscreen.
editing may be traditional and chronological or it ma be manipulated in a creative and confusing way.
rhythm
editing determines the duration of a shot.
an editor can control the rhythm (or beat) of a film by varying the duration of the shots in relation to one another.
continuity editing
a system of cutting to maintain continuous and clear narrative action. (the standard style of editing used in TV and films)
montage editing (non continuity editing)
consists of a series of short shots that are edited into a sequence to condense narrative or to allow the audience to deduce their own meaning

opposing or colliding shots move from one mode to another- high to low angles, close up to long shots, movement within the frame left to right, right to left, up to down.
long takes allow the spectator to settle into the scene; montage jolts the spectator into a confrontation with the material.
parallel editing/ crosscutting
continuity editing technique that alternates back and forth between scenes
temporal ellipses
-using editing to signify the passage of time.
- a fade out/in between scenes is one example of this, since the brief period when the screen goes black often signals a passage in time from one scene to the next.
flashback
the interruption of the chronological plot time with a shot or series of shots that show an event that has happened earlier in the story
flashforward
the interruption of present action by a shot or series of shots that shows images from the plots future
ellipsis
the most common manipulation of time through editing is an omission of the time that separates one shot from another
