What is editing? /5
part of post-production
the splice and mending of shots together to create a scene
shapes how the viewer perceives time and space

can create meaning by putting two shots together
What is “invisible editing”? /3

refers to continuity editing - realistic and not noticeable
sometimes called “Claasical Hollywood” editing
What is realistic time editing?
makes the viewer believe thatthe scene is happening in real time
What is realistic space editnig?
makes the viewer believe that the scene is happening in a setting/location (not in studio)
What is shot length? /2
shorter shots: quicker pace, more action
longer shots: feels slower pace, can build suspense
What is a transition? 2
editing technique of moving from one shot to another

What is a cut?
most common transition
What is a fade-in/out? /3
fades to black
usually link scenes
show the passing of time
What is a dissolve? /2
usually a change of
place or time
can relate images to each other
What is a match cut/grsphic match? /2
when 2 juxtaposing shots are emphasized similarily
2 shots of differnet objects/subjects edited together to show their connection
What is a reverse shot? /3
often shows two characters having a conversation, looking at each other
characters look offscreen to the other character
can include lots of cuts to see the reactions
What is an eyeline match? /2
lets the viewer see what the characters see
character looks off-screen, the the viewer sees that they are looking at
What is parallel editing/cross-cutting? /3
cutting between 2 or more events
different story lines happen in parallel
done to add pace, suspense
What is a cutaway? /4
cut away form the main shot, often to a detail that is important to the plot
can be a closeup shot of an object in the scene (“insert shot”)
can give a view of something the character doesn’t see
can give insight into something the character is dreaming of
What is a montage? /5
series of short shots (quick cuts) to condense space, time, and/or information
can speed up time, develop the story or characters in a
short amount of time
often uses dissolves
usually has music or voiceover, rather than dialogue
