Australian Triage Scale (incl wait times and peformance indicators):
1- LIFE THREAT
2- IMMINENT life threat, or time sensitive
(stroke, torsion)
3- POTENTIAL life threat, or time sensitive
(headache, vomiting)
4- Potentially SERIOUS
(# without NV, swollen joint)
5- Not serious
(ADT)
How to write a clinical guideline:
- Define issue
- Engage stakeholders
- Set objective and timeframe
- Research the topic

ACEM recommendations for SSU design:
Seperate, but close to ED
Dedicated beds with O2 and suction
Dedicated patient toilet/shower
Separation of adults/kids
Dedicated staff station
’Consider’: recliners, kitchenette, ensuite, own pan room
ACEM SSU Performance Indicators:
<15% admitted
<10% overstay
If there <1hr, must have documentation of why it was appropriate/that care was provided.
ACEM SSU Exclusion criteria:
Duration expected >24 hours
Admitted under team
Unstable
Undifferentiated/ unclear plan
Complex needs unable to be met
Overcrowding definition:
ED function impeded as number of patients exceeds physical space or staffing available in ED.
Access Block Definition:
Admitted patients staying in ED in excess of 8 hours due to lack of available inpatient beds.
