What is eczema?
- Group of non-infectious conditions
- Skin becomes - inflamed, dry, and scaly
How is eczema Dx clinically?
- Itchiness
- Red color
- Blister formation
- Scaling
How can eczema appear on brown or black skin?
- Looks darker brown, purple, or ashen grey in color
What type of eczema is this?
Follicular accentuation
Bumps may develop around hair follicles and resemble goosebumps.
Characteristics of eczema:
- Symmetrical distribution
- Comes and goes over several weeks
- Non-migratory
There are many causes of eczema, but the main cause is underlying inflammation which is induced by one of three factors:
- Allergens
- Genetics
- Environmental factors
The two main causes of eczema are:
- Atopic dermatitis
- Exsiccation dermatosis
What is the most common cause of eczema?
- Atopic dermatitis
What is atopic dermatitis?
Inherited chronic inflammatory skin condition
Characteristics of atopic dermatitis:
- Itchy
- Red
- Swollen
- Cracked
- Fluid leaking
What is exsiccation dermatosis?
- Another form of eczema
- Occuring after excessive exposure to H20
- Wash your hands / shower too often
Helpful tips to Dx eczema:
- Eczema is the most common condition
- Eczema is itchy
- Eczema does not cause a rash in the mouth
2 key differences that can help you distinguish between urticaria and eczema:
- Urticaria is a migratory skin condition
- Urticaria has a non-scaling, smooth surface
Rx of eczema:
- Topical steroids (1–2 times daily) x 5/7
- Stop any prior treatments and care products
- Reduce contact with water
- Use a fragrance-free moisturizer without urea
