Ecosystems Overview Flashcards
Chemosynthesis
Reaction performed by bacteria, using energy transferred from chemical reactions to produce glucose.
Fermentation
Chemical reaction used by microorganisms to convert glucose into ethanol, carbon dioxide, and energy.
Niche
A particular place or role that an organism has in an ecosystem.
Community
The collection of the different types of organism present in an ecosystem.
Habitat
The area in which an organism lives.
Population
The number of plants or animals of the same type that live in the same area.
Ecosystems
The name given to plants and animals that are found in a particular location, and the area in which they live.
Interdependence
All the organisms in an ecosystem are dependent upon each other.
Adaption
These are features of their physical bodies or the way that they behave which allow them to survive and succeed.
Nitrates
Nitrogen is needed to make amino acids for proteins, which are needed for cell growth.
Phosphates
Phosphorus is needed to make DNA and cell membranes.
Potassium
Potassium is needed in enzymes involved in respiration and photosynthesis.
magnesium
A mineral needed by plants for making chlorophyll.
