Ecosystems And Their Living Communities Flashcards
Community
Each community is made up of all the populations of various organisms living in the same location at the same time
Ecosystem
A biological community living in a discrete region, the physical surroundings and the interactions that maintain the community
Population
All individuals of one particular species living in the same area at the same time
Littoral zone
The narrow strip of Coast that lies between the lower water mark (LWM) of low and the high water mark (HWM) of hight tide
Producers / autotrophs
Make chemical energy in the form of organic compounds for their own use and also, directly or indirectly, for the use by all other members of the living community of that ecosystem. E.g photosynthesis and chemo
Consumers / heterotrophs
Members of a community that must obtain their energy by eating other organisms or parts of them
Decomposes
Heterotrophs
Herbivores
Eat plants
Carnivores
Eat animals
Omnivores
Eat both plants and animals
Detrivores
Eat decomposing organic matter such a as rotting leaves e.g earth worms
Predator-prey relationship
One species (the predator)kills and eats another living animal (prey)
Intraspecific competition
Competition between members of the same species for resources
Interspecific
Members of a population of one species also compete with members of populations of other species.
Mutualism
Both organisms benefit
