Ecosystems And Material Cycles Flashcards
What are biotic factors
Any living interaction that affects the distribution of an organism
What are abiotic factors
Non living conditions that affect the distribution of an organism
Give 2 examples of abiotic factors
pH of soil
Light intensity
Rainfall
Temperature
Give examples of biotic factors
Interspecific and intraspecific
What is interspecific competition
Competing between species
Eg. Fox eating hare
What is intraspecific competition
Competition within species
Eg. Stags fighting for hinds to mate with
What is symbiosis
A close relationship between two different species
Types of symbiosis
Parasitism and mutualism
When does parasitism occur
When an organism (the parasite) benefits from another organism (the host) while causing harm to the host
Give an example of parasitism
Elephantitis is caused by an infection with roundworms
When does mutualism occur
When two different organisms live together in a relationship that benefits them both. If one is removed, then the other cannot survive
Give an example of mutualism
The polyp gets food from the algae when it cannot survive
What are three ways ecological degradation can occur
Eutrophication
Introduced species
Fish farming
What is eutrophication
A process that is caused by human action (farming and sewage). It literally means the process of making too much food
Why is eutrophication bad
Because water draining from fields sprayed with fertiliser may contain lots of nutrients which may run into rivers. Algae and some water plants float on the surface so when eutrophication happens, the water surface is covered with them. Lack of light prevents the plants below the water surface from photosynthesising. The plants die. Bacteria in the water breaks down the dead plants. The bacteria need energy from aerobic respiration to break them down. Fish die as there is not enough oxygen for them
