Ecosystems and Biomes Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
All the biotic and abiotic parts in an area.
What is the difference between and producer and a consumer?
A producer is an organism that uses sunlight energy to produce food, whereas a consumer gets its energy from other living things.
Give an example of a decomposer
Bacteria/Fungi/Worms/Woodlice
How do decomposers get their energy?
Breaking down dead organic matter
Name the 3 stores in the nutrient cycle
Biomass, Soil and Litter
Give an example of a region where the topical rainforest is found.
Amazon, Brazil
What are the similarities between hot deserts and polar ecosystems?
Low rainfall and little vegetation
Where are tropical rainforests found?
0-25 degrees north and south of the equator.
Between tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
Name and locate a small scale UK ecosystem you have studied.
Epping Forest, Essex, UK.
How is Epping Forest managed?
- Car parks, visitor centre, waste bins, designated paths, information leaflets advising people on how to treat the forest. Ensuring the forest will be left the same way for future generations to enjoy.
- Vegetation at the side of the roads has been cut back so that deer are aware of traffic as there are many deaths from road traffic accidents. Ensures that the deer population will be preserved.
- Pollarding – trees are cut shorter to ensure that they regrow. Ensures there will be timber for future generations.
- The Epping forest conservation volunteers manage the forest by clearing and maintaining footpaths. Ensures vegetation is not trampled and killed
Name 3 biotic factors
Flora (plants), fauna (animals) and fungi
Name 3 abiotic factors
Sunlight, Soil PH and Temperature
What is a food chain?
A series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
What is a food web?
A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains.
Define trophic level.
The trophic level of an organism is the position it occupies in a food web.
