Ecosystems and beyond! Flashcards
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of organisms interacting with their physical environment.
What is biodiversity?
Biodiversity is the variety of all life on earth!
Is having a lot of biodiversity in an ecosystem a good thing or a bad thing?
It is a GOOD thing, having a lot of biodiversity means there will be many different plants and animals. This helps balance out the ecosystem.
What are some examples of nonliving things in an ecosystem?
Rocks, soil, sunlight, and water are some examples.
What is a habitat?
A place where an organism like a plant or animal makes its home.
What is a food chain?
A food web is a model that is made up of many food chains.
What 4 things do organisms need to survive?
Food
Water
Shelter
Space
What makes a healthy ecosystem?
A healthy ecosystem must have many different organisms to keep it in balance.
What is a predator?
An animal that hunts or preys on other animals.
What is prey?
An animal that is hunted and killed by another animal for food.
Give an example of a predator.
Eagle, wolf, snake, or a carnivorous plant like the venus fly trap. And many others!
Give an example of a prey.
Insect, rabbit, tadpole, snake and many others!
Why is biodiversity important in an ecosystem?
Having lots of different plants and animals means that our ecosystems will be able to stay healthy. If the ecosystem is healthy, they will supply us with important things like water and clean air. Even building materials and medicine!
What does interconnectedness mean?
Interconnectedness means that all things are related to and interact with each other in the environment.
Draw an example of a food chain on a piece of paper.
Always start with the sun! Your food chain should include at least one producer, one consumer, and one decomposer.
