Ecosystems Flashcards
Photosynthesis equation
Carbon dioxide + water -> glucose + oxygen
Anaerobic respiration equation
Glucose -> lactic acid + energy
Aerobic respiration equation
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water + energy
Fermentation
Glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
Where does aerobic respiration take place
The mitochondria
Muscles can respire anaerobically
This is when muscles are working hard and the blood system can’t bring oxygen and glucose quickly enough.
Oxygen debt
Oxygen needed to get rid of lactic acid.
Photosynthesis
A chemical reaction for plants to get food.
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In chloroplasts found in leaf cells.
Chlorophyll
Leaves are green because of this green pigment called chlorophyll. It also traps light from the sun
Veins in leaves
Contains xylem tubes which transports water, and phloem tubes which transports glucose
Stomata
Allows gases to diffuse into and out of the leaf. Guard cells open and close the stomata during the day and night.
Palisade layer
Contains cells with chloroplasts. Where photosynthesis occurs.
Spongy layer
Contains air spaces, allow CO2 and O2 to diffuse in and out through the leaf.
Waxy cuticle
Reduces amount of water evaporating.
