What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem includes all the LIVING (biotic) and NON - LIVING (abiotic) parts in an area
What is a decomposer?
an organism that gets its energy by breaking down dead material e.g. Bacteria and fungi
Characteristics of tundra
found at high altitudes (above 60 N) in norther Europe and Canada.
little rainfall.
hardly any trees
vegetation includes mosses and low shrubs
layer of permanently frozen ground called permafrost
Characteristics of grassland
savannah grasslands - found between tropics with distinct dry & wet seasons
vegetation is grass and trees
Characteristics of temperate deciduous forests
found in mid - latitudes where there are 4 distinct seasons.
Characteristics of tropical rainforests
found at equator where it is hot and wet all year round
dense canopies of vegetation forming distinct layers.
Characteristics of polar
found at north and south poles
very cold, icy and dry
not much vegetation - it is dark most the year
