Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystems
A place where living and non-living things interact.
Community
Where organisms live together in an ecosystem
Niche
The role each species plays.
Biotic Factors
Living things
Abiotic Factors
Non-living things
Population
A group of organisms of one type that live in the same area
Species
All members of a population are members of the same species.
Adaptation
A structure of behavior that allows a species to survive and reproduce in it’s environment.
Environment
All living and non-living things around an organism is it’s environment.
Habitat
A place where an organism lives
Tundra
Characteristics:Very cold, polar bears live there,it is a cold dessert,it is the coldest biome on earth, can be as cold as -50 degrees F.,it covers 1/5 of Earth
Biome
A large ecosystem
Deciduous Forest
Characteristics:4 seasons, the trees lose there leaves, the average temperature is 50 degrees F.,there are lots of trees there
Desert
Characteristics:covers about 1/5 of the Earth, deserts can be hot or cold, plants that live in the desert are great at storing water like cacti
Tropical Rainforest
Characteristics: close to the equator, wet, temperatures range from 70 degrees F to 85 degrees F,animals that live in the rainforest have adaptations that help them live and survive in trees
Grasslands
Characteristics: Weather varies greatly, cold in the winter and hot in the summer, most important plant is grass, animals that live there are usually herbivores, gophers live there
Taiga
Characteristics: It is the largest land biome, long cold winters, short mild wet summers, most common type of tree is conifer, animals have thick coats of fur to survive cold winters, some animals are deer, moose and elk
Producer
A living thing that produces its own food and gets its energy from the sun
Herbivore
An animal that eats only plants
Carnivore
An animal that eats only meat
Omnivore
An animal that eats both meat and plants
Consumer
An animal that is either a carnivore, herbivore,or an omnivore
Food Chain
A hierarchical series of organism each dependent on the next as a source of food
Decomposer
A living thing that feeds on and breaks down plant and animal matter into simpler parts or substances
Food Webs
A system of interlocking and interdependent food chains
