Ecosystems Flashcards
How are organisms organized in living?
The organisms are divided by physical similarities.
What is a species?
A species is a grouping of organisms with similar physical features.
What is a population?
A populatiom is the number of living in a particular ecosystem.
What is a community?
People or animals who have things in common.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is the interaction of all living organisms within the community with their physical environment.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is where an organism can find a food, water and shelter.
What is the difference between predator and prey?
Predators are organisms that hunt and consume other organisms. Prey are the organisms that are being hunted and eaten.
What is mimicry?
Mimicry occurs when one organism has evolved to look like another and gains an advantage because of this similarity.
What is camouflage?
Camouflage is a survival strategy where animals blend into their surroundings so they cant be seen.
What does it mean if an organism is brightly coloured?
If an organism is brightly coloured, it means that it is most likely poisonous.
What are the benefits of an insect having tricky patterned wings?
An advantage of having tricky patterns is that they look like predators so they don’t get eaten. For example, some butterflies wings look like owls because they are big predators so since they look dangerous they rarely get eaten.
What is the difference between a food chain and food web?
A food chain is a simple feeding pathway within an ecosystem. A food web shows all of the food chains within the ecosystem.
