Ecosystems Flashcards
Ecosystems
It is large and all encompassing, and its relationships and interactions
can be very complex, so we tend to study smaller components of the biosphere, called ecosystems.
Biotic
Living organisms
Abiotic
Non living conditions
Habitat
A habitat is a particular area where a group of different organisms live, and the area is similar to abiotic condition.
Population
All the individuals of a particular species living the the same habitat called a population
Community
All of the populations of all the different organisms in that habitat called a community
Photosynthesis
The process of which plants take in carbon dioxide form the air or water if they are aquatic plants and release oxygen in the process of photosynthesis
Respiration
Plants and animals including humans, use the oxygen from the process of photosynthesis in a process called respiration, and release carbon dioxide back into the air.
Glucose
The sun’s energy is used is used to join carbon dioxide in water molecules to form oxygen and a sugar called glucose
Food chain
A food chain shows a list of organisms in the order of what they eats what with an arrow between each organism to indicate the direction of the flow of energy
Food web
These multiple food chains can be linked together in a food web to represent the feeding relationship between the different organisms in a ecosystem
Trophic level
Position in a food web depending of which food chain within the web
Introduced species
A introduced species is an organism not native or natural to the ecosystem
Biological control
Using existing food web relationships to control a species
Biodiversity
Is a measure of number of different species in a particular ecosystem
