Ecosystems Flashcards
Revision
What is a ecosystem
A ecosystem is where different plants and animals that live and interact in a particular environment
What is a biome?
A biome is a large scale ecosystem
What is a terrestrial ecosystem?
It is a land based ecosystem
What is the biosphere?
The biosphere is the organisms that live within the environment
What is a marine ecosystem?
An ocean based ecosystem
What are biotic component
Living parts of an ecosystem
What are abiotic components?
Non-living parts of an ecosystem
What is the Gersmehl model?
The nutrient cycle
What 3 components make up biodiversity?
1) Range of plant and animal species
2) Population of each species
3) uniqueness of species
What are the 4 layers of the Tropical rainforests (TRF) called?
Emergent
Canopy
Under storey
Litter zone
Examples of TRF’s goods
Food, rubber, timber and medicine
Examples of TRF’s services
tourism, river transportations and absorbs Carbon dioxide
What are the causes of deforestation in the TRF?
agriculture, housing
What is the name of the code that has given the TRF protection?
The forest code
How has the TRF been sustainably managed?
Ecotourism, reduced impact-logging
What is ecotourism?
travel to natural areas that does no damage to the environment
What are the 4 layers of a deciduous woodland called?
Canopy layer
Shrub layer
Field/herb layer
Ground layer
What are the size of the 3 nutrient stores in a deciduous woodland
The biomass, litter and soil are all of a similar size
Examples of adaptations of plant adaptations
Bluebells bloom in the spring when there is the most sunlight and are adapted to shady conditions
Causes of deforestation in a deciduous woodland
need for farmland, pesticide damage, land to build houses and need for farmland
How is the new forest being sustainably managed?
Use of ponies to increase biodiversity
Forest tours
easy transport links
Characteristics of a tundra biome
Bitterly dark winter, little vegetation and low levels of precipitation
Characteristics of a coniferous biome
Cool winters and summers, needle leaves to maximise water loss
Characteristics of a deciduous biome
Shed leaves to deal with cold winters, grow big leaves for summer months
