What is the definition of population?
Group of organisms of the same species living in the same habitat
What is the definition of habitat?
Part of an ecosystem in which particular organisms live
What is the definition of community?
All the populations of different species in the same area at the same time
What is the definition of ecosystem?
A community and the non-living components of an environment (the biotic & abiotic factors) - they range in size from very small to very large
What is the definition of niche?
An organism’s role within an ecosystem, including their position in the food web and habitat. Each species occupies their own niche governed by adaptation to both abiotic & biotic conditions
What are abiotic factors?
Non-living conditions of an ecosystem
What are biotic factors?
Impact of the interactions between organisms
What do plants produce in an ecosystem?
They are the producers of a food web as they are able to produce their own carbohydrates using carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, or water
Why is the majority of energy between each tropic level of a food web lost?
Due to respiration & excretion
What is the remaining energy in a food web used for?
Forming biomass
