Ecosystems Flashcards
What are species?
Organisms which interbreed to produce fertile offspring belong to the same species
What is biodiversity
Biodiversity refers to the range of different species present in an ecosystem
What is population
Population is a group of organisms in the same species
Define producer
A producer is an organism which can make food on its own in the process of photosynthesis. Producer are found at the start of food chain
What is a consumer
A consumer is that organism which must eat to obtain food. Primary consumer is the first animal in a food chain that eats producers
What is a herbivore
A herbivore is an animal that eats plants
What is carnivore
An animal that eats meat/other animals
What is a omnivore
An omnivore is an animal which eats both plants and other animals
What is a predator
A predator is an animal that hunts kills and eats other animals
What is a prey
Prey refers to the animal that is hunted killed and eaten by a predator
What is a food chain
Food chain is a diagram which illustrates a feeding relationships. A producer is always found at the start, followed by a primary consumer then secondary consumer
What is a food web
A food web is a more complex diagram in which several food chains are linked. It illustrates a variety of predator and prey relationships
What happens when one organism is removed from a food web
It will affect other organisms
When does competition occur in the ecosystems
Competition occurs when resources are in short supply
What do organisms compete for
Organism might compete for food, habitat/territory/space, mates, water, light (plants)
