Ecosystems Flashcards
Producer
(Autotroph) make their own food by photosynthesis
Consumer
(heterotroph) Rely on the consumption/digestion of producers, consumers or both to survive
Herbivores
Only eat plants. Important in an ecosystem as the maintain the growth of vegetation (prevent overgrowth). Many plants rely on herbivores to reproduce
Carnivore
Eat meat/flesh. can be predators or scavengers. Predators help maintain prey sizes. Scavengers help prevent diseases from spreading
Omnivore
Eats both plant and animals. Advantage of being able to survive a variety of environments
Decomposers
Break down dead organisms into simpler materials, making nutrients available. Fungi, bacteria, invertebrae
Food Chain
Linear chain that depicts organism and what they eat in order. Transfer of matter
Food web
System of interlocking and independent food chains
Organism
Animal, plant or single celled life form
Population
Group of the same specie that live in a similar geographic area and breed together
Community
Group of various species who interact in a common location. Various populations
Ecosystems
Ecological community made up of biological. physical and chemical components that react with all the biotic and abiotic components in a specific area. Community but with abiotic and biotic factor
Atmosphere
envelope of gases surrounding earth or another planet
Lithosphere
outer ridge part of earth
Hydrosphere
Water on the surface of earth
