Ecosystems Flashcards
What is a ecosystem
A community of biotic organisms interacting with the abiotic environment.
What is a abiotic factor
Non-living parts of an ecosystem
What is a biotic factor
Living parts of an ecosystem
Consumer definition
Organism that gets its energy from eating other organisms
Producer definition
Gets it’s energy from sunlight
Decomposer definition
Gets it’s energy from broken down dead material
Compare a food chain and a food web
A food chain- connection between different organisms that rely on eachother as their food source. Food web- complex hierarchy of organisms relying on eachother for food.
Define the nutrient cycle
A set of processes where organisms extract mineral necessary for growth from soil or water before passing them through the food chain and back into the soil and water.
Define a global ecosystem
Large scale ecosystems that all cover a large amount of the planets surface
Name two characteristics of Tundra
•very cold through most of the year
•found Northern Europe/Canada/Alaska
•sparse/no tree growth
•low precipitation
Characteristics of a desert
•low precipitation
•less then 250mm of rainfall per year
•extreme temperatures 45 at day 0 at night
• very dry
Characteristics of polar regions
• dry/cold/icy all year
•northern and South Pole
•short growing season
•in areas such as Antarctica/Greenland
