Ecosystems Flashcards
Define an ecosystem
Made up of all the living organisms that interact with one another in a defined area, ans also physical factors present in that region
Define both abiotic and biotic factors
Abiotic factor- non living or physical factors that affect an ecosystem e.g amount of rainfall
Biotic factors- living factors that affect an ecosystem
Define both producer and consumer
Producer - organism that converts light energy into chemical energy
Consumer - organism that obtain their energy by feeding on other organisms
What is a decomposer
Break down dead organisms releasing nutrients back into the ecosystem
What is biomass
The mass of living material present in a particular place or particular organis
What do ecological pyramids show
It shows the pyramids of number, biomass and energy.
HOWEVER not all energy is consumed as energy is lost in faeces, excretory products e.g urine, heat in respiration
What do pyramids of biomass represent
Represents the total dry mass of living organisms at each trophies at each trophies level
Define autotroph, photoautotroph, chemoautroph
Autotroph - organism that manufactures its own food = producer
Photoautotroph- organism that manufacture its own food using light energy
Chemoautotroph- organism that manufactures its own food using energy derived from chemical reactions
