ecosystems Flashcards
ecosystem
interaction between living things and their surroundings
biotic factors
living things in the environment (animals, plants, bacteria, fungi)
abiotic factors
non living things in the environment (water, air, soil, light intensity, weather, temp, rain…)
prey/predator relationship
interaction between two species where one species is the hunted food source for the other
competition
when two organisms share the same niche and are competing for resources
interspecific
competition between the same species
infraspecific
competition between different species
niche
habitat with all the resources and role of the organism
exclusion
when the dominant species kills the competing one (one out of two results of competition)
resource partitioning
when the competing organisms find a way to share the resources in the environment (one out of two results of competition)
symbiosis
interaction between two different organisms living in the same ecosystem
mutualism
when both organisms benefit from the symbiotic relationship
commensalism
when only one organism benefits from the relationship but the other is not harmed
parasitism
when one organism is benefiting from the relationship but the other is harmed
species
a group of organisms that can reproduce and have fertile offspring
