Ecosystem Processes Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction that takes place in chloroplasts to produce glucose
What is the formula for photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide + Water > Oxygen + Glucose (CO2 + H20 > O2 + C6H12O6
Give an example of a mineral plants need for growth
Nitrates, phosphates, potassium, magnesium
What role do veins in a leaf play in photosynthesis? (If possible name the two types)
Xylem and phloem veins transport water and glucose.
What does the Chlorophyll in a plant do?
Abrosrb sunlight for photosynthesis.
Why do leaves have a large surface area?
To absorb as much light as possible
What is Oxygen Debt?
The amount of Oxygen needed to break down lactic acid.
What is mineral defficiency on a plant
When a plant doesn’t have enough minerals and farmers can use fertilisers to assist the feeding of minerals to plants
Where does the energy come from in photosynthesis
Sunlight
What leaves a leaf (a gas formerly a compound with another element)
Oxygen
What are the two names of the leaf layers
The spongy and palisade layer
What is a food chain?
Food chains are diagrams which show the transfer of energy between organisms which arrows and trophic levels represent
What are food webs?
Interconnected food chains in an ecosystem
What is a herbivore?
A consumer which eats the producer (plants)
What is a carnivore?
An animal that eats other animals to get their energy
