Ecosystem dynamics (Unit 3, Topic 2) Flashcards
Feeding relationships within a community
Food web
Convert simple inorganic chemicals into complex organic molecules. Most use solar radiation as their energy source
Producers
Use food produced by other organisms as their energy source
Consumers
Obtain their nutrients by ingesting and digesting the nutrients in detritus (undigested food and dead organisms) internally
Detrivitivore
Externally digest detritus with enzymes, before absorbing nutrients directly into their cells
Decomposers
States that there cannot be two species competing for the same resources while stably co-existing with one another
Competitive exclusion principle
Are those which influence their communities in a way that is not proportional to their abundance
Keystone species
Refers to the total amount of organisms that a region can sustain without environmental degradation. This is greatly determined by biotic and abiotic factors, as they influence both the ecosystem and all organisms living within it
Carrying capacity
