Ecosystem Flashcards
A living thing
Organism
An environment that provides the things a specific organism needs to live, grow, and reproduce.
Habitat
A living or once living part of an organism’s habitat
Biotic Factor
A nonliving part of an organism’s habitat
Abiotic factor
All the members of one species living in the same area
Population
All the different populations that live together in a certain area
Community
The community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving environment
Ecosystem
An environmental factor that causes a population decrease in size
Limiting factor
An organism gets food, water, shelter, and other things from its environment that it needs to live, grow, and reproduce
Resources
The number of individuals in an area of a specific size
Density
An organism that can make its own food
Producer
An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Consumer
An organism that gets its energy by breaking down biotic waste and dead organisms and returns raw materials to the soil and water
Decomposer
A series of events in an ecosystem in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Food chain
A pattern of overlapping feeding relations or food chains among the various organisms in an ecosystem
Food web
A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web
Energy pyramid
The part organisms play in their ecosystems such as a consumer, producer, or decomposer
