Ecosystem, 10 Flashcards
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is a community where rock, soil, vegetation, animals, humans water, the atmosphere and climate all interact. Ecosystem are made up of biotic ( living ) things ( eg plants and bacteria ) and abiotic (non-living) things ( eg climate and soil ).
Food web
Tertiary consumers
(foxes, hawks and wolves, snakes)
Secondary consumers (insects, foxes, hawks and wolves, spiders) Primary consumers (rabbits, squirrels, mice, birds, insects) Producers (plants)
Decomposition
Decomposition = the breaking down of dead organic material. This process is essential in order to release nutrients back into the soil ready to be used once more.
Biomes
The Earth can be divided into 8 huge ecosystem ( biomes ). Each has its own set of characteristics unique to itself.
- coniferous forest
- deciduous forest
- tropical rainforest
- savanna / grassland
- tundra
- ocean
- fresh water
- desert
Animal adaptation in rainforest
- camouflage
- poison
- sharp teeth
Biodiversity
Biodiversity = the variety of life in the world or a particular ecosystem.
Sustainable management
Sustainable management = meeting the needs of the current population without compromising the needs of future generation.
Conservation
Conservation = the practice of caring for these resources, so living things can benefit from them now in the future.
Protection
Protection = construction buildings, so that they are safe to live in and will not collapse.
Controlled logging
Controlled logging = it involves careful management of forests that are being logged ( law enforcement and education ) eg selective cutting vs clear cutting.
Strategies of sustainable rainforest
Strategies of sustainable rainforest :
1. Selective logging and replanting
2. Conservation and education
3. Ecotourism
4. International hardwood agreements
5. Reducing Debt
Strategies of sustainable rainforest.
Selective logging and replanting
When trees are replanting, this is less damages them
Strategies of sustainable rainforest,
Conservation and education
When different countries give to rainforest trees
Strategies of sustainable rainforest,
Ecotourism
Ecotourism minimises damage to the environment and benefits local people.
+ tourism gives money to country and they can use this money for replanting trees
Strategies of sustainable rainforest,
International hardwood agreements
There are international agreements in place to try to prevent illegal logging, and to promote to use of hardwood from sustainably managed forests.
