Economy Flashcards
Introduction - Themes
- State’s Jurisdiction
- Socialist v Liberal
- Equality of Opportunity
Introduction - Argument
There is little agreement between the strand accept from that the economy aids the oppression of women, therefore, feminists disagree more about the nature of the economy in a future society
Agree - State’s Jurisdiction - Point
Feminists agree that the state can implement economic policies within the public sphere to try and stop the oppression of women
Agree - State’s Jurisdiction - Example
Feminists are supportive of recent legislation to limit the effect of the gender pay gap - Equality Act 2010
Disagree - State’s Jurisdiction - Point
- Liberal Feminists advocate for the separation of private and public sphere, meaning they do not think that the state should implement economic policies that affect the home
- Radical Feminists, such as Hanisch and Firestone, do not recognise the distinctions between the private and public sphere
Disagree - State’s Jurisdiction - Example
(Liberal)
Simone De Beauvoir supports the liberal notion that the state can grant opportunities within the public sphere, however, it is ultimately the women’s decision what they wish to do in the private sphere
Disagree - State’s Jurisdiction - Example
(Socialist)
Sheila Rowbotham argues that the ‘personal is political.’ Therefore, she argues that women are used a form of unpaid labour, especially in the nuclear family, and this impacts on the patriarchy
Agree - Socialist v Liberal - Point
All feminists agree that women are discriminated against in the economic world
Agree - Socialist v Liberal - Examples
This includes women being seen as dispensable labour, the gender pay gap and the glass ceiling in which women are denied equal opportunities as men
Disagree - Socialist v Liberal - Point
- Liberal Feminists are less aspirational and argue that through state legislation these problems will gradually be solved
- Socialist Feminists argue these problems will continue unless capitalism is overthrown
Disagree - Socialist v Liberal - Example
Sheila Rowbotham builds upon Friedrich Engels theory that oppression of women is firmly at the door of capitalism and proposes that capitalism must be overthrown and replaced by a new world where in equality is paramount
Agree - Equality - Point
There is agreement between the branches of feminism that women should be offered equality of opportunity with men. This mainly applies to education and employment
Agree - Equality - Example
Socialist Thinker, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, agrees that the way in which women should be liberated from much male domination lay in equality of opportunity
Disagree - Equality - Point
Post-modern Feminists build upon equality of opportunity with the theory of intersectionality - they argue that women have multiple identities other than just being female, therefore it is unfair to say that all struggles are the same
Disagree - Equality - Example
(Post-Modern)
Kate Millett criticises parts of the feminist movement for being concerned largely with problems relating to middle-class women and focuses more on the problems that working-class women experience
