Economiser Page 10 Flashcards

Q

Why is regular soot blowing necessary for exhaust gas economisers?

A

Regular soot blowing is required to remove excess carbon build-up on heat transfer surfaces, preventing insulation that causes overheating or poor heat transfer efficiency. It also reduces the risk of carbon fires and ensures good steam generating efficiency.

Q

Why is it important to maintain the exhaust gas temperature above the dew point?

A

Maintaining the exhaust gas temperature above the dew point prevents the formation of condensate that can cause corrosion in the exhaust manifold and liners. It also prevents harmful corrosive acids from forming due to condensate mixing with combustion gases.

Q

List three indications of an exhaust gas economiser fire.

A
  1. High and rising uptake temperature outlets
  2. High and rising steam outlet pressure
  3. Paint discolouration, strong odour, and smoke in the surrounding area
  4. Smoke & sparks from funnel
  5. Overheating at economiser body (External casing)

Q

What is the course of action to take if an economiser fire is discovered while on passage?

A
  1. Raise the Fire Alarm
  2. Inform the bridge and chief engineer; take permission to stop the main engine.
  3. Gradually slow down the main engine and then stop.
  4. Stop the auxiliary blowers and block the air intakes of the main engine.
  5. Start the emergency generator and fire pump.
  6. Stop all mechanical ventilators within the machine space.
  7. Close all fire dampers.
  8. If firefighting equipment is fitted, it should be brought into operation.
  9. Cool down the economiser by means of boundary cooling.
  10. The circulation pump must be run, but if a large amount of water is lost, it must be stopped.
