Economic world Flashcards
Development?
-Process of a country as it becomes economically + technically advanced
-Can also be applied to improvements in quality of life (e.g human rights, increased incomes, healthier living conditions, and educational oppetunities)
What is HDI?
-Human Development index is the most common use of measuring development
-Incorporates a range of social +economic indictors of development to calculate an index from 0 to 1
Why does reliance on exports of raw material hinder economic development?
-LICs trade commodities (typically) while HICs trade processed goods—–> commodities are lower value than processed goods
-Prices of commodities fluctuate causing great uncertainty + instability for countries trying to develop
-Imbalance in trade between HICs and LICs has INCREASED development gap
Economic and social measures of development
GNI
Birth rate
Death rate
Infant mortality
Life expectancy
People per doctor
Literacy rates
Access to safe water
HDI
What is a DTM?
-A Demographic Transition Model is a graph that shows change in BIRTH + DEATH rates over time AND how the population changes as a result
- Does not show impact of migration on total population
Why is population growth greater in stage 2?
A high natural increase occurs due to death rate falling rapidly due to improvements in healthcare + sanitation whereas birth rate is still high
Why is birth rate a better indicator of development than death rate?
-Death rates are a poor indicator of development because they can be high in LICs from poverty BUT also from HICs due to an ageing population
-Birth rates are usually associated
Physical causes of uneven development:
-Weather + climate- Extreme conditions make economic develoment more challenging
-Relief- Mountainous regions are usually remote with poor infrastructure
-Landlocked countries- Without a coastline, landlocked countries lack sea trade
-Tropical Environments- Environments are prone to disease
-Water Storage- Essential for life+development, therefore development is challenging with water scarcity
Consequences of uneven development
-Disparities in wealth
-Disparities in health
-International Migration
