Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
Ecology is the study of how living things interact with their environment and each other.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives is it’s habitat.
Population
A population is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same habitat.
Community
A community is all of the different populations that live in a habitat.
Ecosystem
An ecosystem is all the communities interacting with each other and their environment.
Balance of Nature
Overtime, the numbers and the types of species in an ecosystem reaches a steady state. This steady state is known as the balance of nature.
Biome
An ecosystem that extends over a very large area is called biome.
Biosphere
All of the Earth’s ecosystems together form one large ecosystem known as the biosphere.
Abiotic
Non-living: such as the temperature and the type of land.
Biotic
Living: the types of organisms that live there and how they affect each other.
Competition
Competition is the struggle between organisms for things that are in short supply, such as food, space, oxygen, water, light and mates.
Predation
Predation controls the number of organisms in an ecosystem.
Predator
Is an organism that hunts and kills another animal as a source of food.
Prey
Is an organism being hunted.
Symbiosis
Is a relationship between organisms of different species where at least one benefits.
Interdependence
When two organisms depend on each other for an important aspect of their survival it is called interdependence.
Adaption
When an organism develops characteristics that make it better suited to its habitat. Adaption is the result of evolution.
Niche
A niche is the role of an organism within a habitat.
Food chain
The way in which energy and nutrients are passed from one organism to another.
Producer
Green plant that makes their own food using photosynthesis (the sun)
Consumer
All other organisms after the producer, they either eat plants or other animals
Decomposer
Breaks down dead plants and animals. E.g. earthworm, fungi, bacteria.
Food web
Interconnecting food chains that show that all organisms in an ecosystem depend on each other for survival
Pollution
the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance which has harmful or poisonous effects.
