Ecology Flashcards
Biotic
All of the living parts in a ecosystem
Energy Pyramid
A model that shows available amount of energy in each trophic layer I an ecosystem
Foodweb
A model that shows many different feeding relationships among living things in a given area
Decomposer
Organisms which carry out out the process of decomposition by breaking down dead decaying organisms
Food chain
A model that shows feelings one set of feeding relationships among living things
Coniferous
Plants that reduce reproductive organs called cones
Biome
A large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat, forest or tundra.
Deciduous
(Of a tree or shrub)shedding its leaves annually
Ecology
The political movement of hat seeks to protect the environment, especially from population
Cycle
A complete set or series
Nitrogen cycle
the series of processes by which nitrogen and its compounds are interconverted in the environment and in living organisms, including nitrogen fixation and decomposition.
Biotic factors
A living thing,as an animal or plant, that influences or affects an ecosystems
Water cycle
the cycle of processes by which water circulates between the earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers, and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.
Abiotic factors
a nonliving condition or thing, as climate or habitat, that influences or affects an ecosystem and the organisms in it: Abiotic factors can determine which species of organisms will survive in a given environment.
Producer
a person, company, or country that makes, grows, or supplies goods or commodities for sale.
Carbon cycle
the series of processes by which carbon compounds are interconverted in the environment, chiefly involving the incorporation of carbon dioxide into living tissue by photosynthesis and its return to the atmosphere through respiration, the decay of dead organisms, and the burning of fossil fuels.
Predator
an animal that naturally preys on others
Prey
address a solemn request or expression of thanks to a deity or other object of worship.
Succession
a number of people or things sharing a specified characteristic and following one after the other.
