Ecology Flashcards
What is a energy pyramid
Heravores on the bottom of every pyramid such as rabbits, cows, pigs, and some bugs
What is a food web
Food web shows all the feeding relationships between plants and animals and how they interconnect with multiple paths.
What is a decomposer
A decomposer breaks down and absorb nutrients from decaying organisms and water matter.they play an important role in an ecosystem by clearing up wasteland recycling nutrients.
What is a food chain
A food chain shows how food and energy passes from one organism to another in an ecosystem.
What is Coniferous
When pine needles or othe trees with green needles are call coniferous
What is a consumer
Organisms that can not make their on food depend on plants or other animals.
What is a biome
Large areas like the tundra, rain forests, and deserts are different kinds of biomes. Each biome has distinctive plant and animal groups.
What is deciduous
A deciduous forest contains trees that lose their leaves each year. The leaves also change color. They turn red, orange, and yellow in autumn and then fall off. They grow back in spring.
What is a cycle
In a cycle, a substance moves through a series of events in which it is continually recycled. In the nitrogen cycle, nitrogen and its compounds are regenerated in the environment. In the rock cycle, rock and its forms undergo a series of changes above and below Earth’s surface.
What is nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen in the atmosphere has to be fixed or combined before it can be used by plants and animals. Nitrogen fixation takes place through lightning or biologically through bacteria in the nodules in the roots of leguminous plants.
What is a water cycle
The water cycle is a geochemical cycle of water between Earth, oceans, and the sky. It is a continuous process and involves water in all the three phases of matter.
What is a producer
Producers use sunlight and carbon dioxide to make food for themselves. Herbivorous consumers depend on producers for food.
What is a carbon cycle
Carbon moves continuously through the atmosphere, living organisms, and Earth’s crust in its various states.
What is a predator
A predator is an animal that hunts other animals for food. Lions are the most feared and ferocious predators of the grassland biomes. They hunt animals like zebras, wildebeest, impalas, and buffalo
What is prey
A prey is an animal that is hunted by other animals. In a grassland ecosystem, a mouse is the prey of a snake and the snake in turn, is preyed on by hawks.
