Ecology Flashcards
What energy conversion do plants carry out?
Convert light energy into chemical energy
What substance is needed in photosynthesis
Chlorophyll in the chloroplasts
When does starch form in leaves
Starch can only be created if there is sunlight
How do you test for starch
Iodine
What is the process that uses glucose synthesis in photosynthesis
Cellular respiration
How do plants store starch
Roots and leaves. Some develop special organs to store the starch (potatoes).
When light intensity increases, photosynthesis does what?
The rate of photosynthesis increases
Cellular respiration word equation
Glucose+Oxygen —> Water+Carbon Dioxide+Energy
What is ATP
Adenosine Tri Phosphate. Is the form of energy the body can readily use
Two differences between Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
- Photosynthesis requires Chlorophyll
- Photosynthesis needs sunlight
Name 4 processes that use energy produced by cellular respiration
Moving, reproduction, growing, repairing
What does Xylem do? Where is it located?
Forces water and nutrients up throughout the plant and through the roots. Xylem is the middle part of the plant stem.
What does Phloem do?
Brings extra waste and water down the plant and also brings things up the plant. It’s a 2 way system and in the outer layers of the stem
What are Xylem and Phloem
Tissues in a plant that form tubes for transportation
Three mechanisms formed in the movement of water from xylem
Root pressure, capillarity, osmosis
