Ecology Flashcards
Abiotic( Non-Living)
Factors such as temperature, light, water, nutrients, sun, wind, and water
Biotic(Living)
Factors— all of the living things
Four levels of study?
Species
Population
Community
Ecosystem
Species
A group of organisms so similar that they can breed and produce viable offspring.
Population
Groups of individuals of the same species that live in the same area.
Community
All of the organisms in a particular area
Ecosystem
All of the abiotic factors and community of species in a particular area.
Ecosystems #2
A particular population of species lives in a habitat.
An individual lives in a smaller area called a niche.
Symbiosis
Close and often long term interactions between different biological species.
- Commensalism
- Parasitism
- Mutualism
Commensalism
One helped other neither harmed or helped (+/o)
Parasitism
One helped one harmed (+/-)
Mutualism
Both helped (+/+)
Predator/ prey
(+/-)
Competition
(-/-)
Inter specific
Occurs when individual of different species compete for the same essential resources.
Intraspecific
Occurs when individuals of the same species compete for the same essential resources.
Producers( Autotrophs)
Capture energy and make energy storing molecules( glucose) through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis in the absence of light.
Consumers( Heterotrophs)
Obtain energy by consuming plants or other animals.
Trophic(energy) level is determined by the source of energy
Biome
Climatically and geographically defined area of similar climatic conditions such as communities of plants and animals
Ecological Succession
The series of predictable changes that occur in a community over time
Primary Succession
Succession that occurs on land where no soil exists.
Occurs on surface formed from volcanic eruptions or on rock exposed when glaciers melt
Secondary Succession
Occurs when a disturbance changes an existing community without removing soil
Population
All of the individuals in a species that live in a particular habitat and can reproduce
Population Density
A measurement of population per unit area or unit volume
