Ecology Flashcards
Levels of organization
Biosphere
What is ecology?
The scientific analysis of interactions among organisms and their environment.
Abiotic environment
Non-living components. Eks. rocks, water, sun, wind and temp.
Biotic environment
Living components. Includes producers, consumers and decomposers.
Producers
Autotrophs - plants. Convert energy from photosynthesis or other sources into food.
Consumers
Heterotrophs - animals. Depend on producers for food.
Decomposers
Detritivores - fungi and bactiera. Break down chemicals from producers and consumers into simpler forms which can be reused.
Community/Bipcoenosis
Associations of populations of two or more different species that occupy the same area in an particular time.
Populations
A summation of all organisms within a species which live in a particular geographical area.
Factor affecting populations size?
Births, deaths, immigration and emigration.
Ecosystem
A community of living organisms in conjunction with the abiotic components of their environment, interacting as a system.
