Ecology Flashcards
Biodiversity
Variety of life
Bioaccumulation
When organisms absorb toxins faster than they can remove them
Biomagnification
A chemical increases in concentration as it travels UP the food chain
Photosynthesis
CO2 + H2O + E (light) —> C6H2O6 (sugar) + O2
Cellular Respiration
C6H1206 + O2 —> CO2 + H2O + E (breaks down sugar to useable forms of energy, in this case carbon dioxide and water
Trophic level
Each level of a food chain is called a trophic level
-1st Trophic level (producer)
-2nd Trophic level (primary consumer)
-3rd Trophic level (secondary consumer)
-4th Trophic level (tertiary consumer)
-5th Trophic level (quaternary consumer)
Restorative ecology
the scientific study of repairing disturbed ecosystems through human intervention.
Biomes
Large area that has a particular climate and particular species of plants and animals
Keystone species
A species which others largely depend on and if it were to disappear, the ecosystem would change drastically
Biocontrol + Bioremediation
-the control of the growth of an insect or pest by using a biological agent or living organism
-the use of microbes to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater
Food Webs VS Chain
-food webs are composed of MANY interacting food chains in an ecosystem
-a food chain follows ONE path of energy and interactions between species
