Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
the study of how organisms interact with each other and with their environment.
Habitat
is the place where an organism lives.
Ecosystem
comprises the interacting living and non-living components of a particular area.
Biosphere
is the part of the earth inhabited by living organisms.
Population
all the organisms of the same species in the same habitat or area.
Community
contains all the different populations living in the same habitat or area.
Environmental factors affecting living organisms
- Abiotic factors
- Biotic factors
Abiotic factors
External influences by non-living components. EG- edaphic factors, climatic factors, aquatic factors.
Biotic factors
External influences by living things. EG- food organisms, parasites, competition, pollinators, seed dispersal organisms, predation.
Edaphic factors
soil features that influence the growth of plants or animals. EG- pH, humus content, mineral composition, drainage.
Climatic factors
are the influences of prevailing weather conditions on living organisms in the ecosystem. EG- wind direction, wind speed, light intensity, temperature, humidity, rainfall.
Aquatic factors
are items of environmental information relating to aquatic habitats. EG- tides, waves, currents, temperature, salinity.
