ecology Flashcards
what is a habitat
a place where an organism lives
what is a population
all the organisms of a certain species that live in the same habitat
what is a community
all the populations of a different species that live in the same habitat
what is an ecosystem
the interaction of biotic and abiotic parts of the environment
give 3 biotic factors
- competition for food
- development of a new disease
- new preditors
give 3 abiotic factors
- ph levels of soil
- temperature
- wind intensity/humidity
explain the water cycle
- the energy from the sun evaporates the water from land and the sea. And the water from leaves (transpiration)
- this water vapour then rises into the clouds, but as it gets cooler the vapour begins to condense into the clouds
- this water then falls as precipitation, giving the land and sea fresh water
what are the three ways to increase biodiversity
breeding programs
adding field margins
recycle
what are the problems with increasing biodiversity
- it is expensive
- things like pesticides and fertilisers are needed in order to grow the food we need
explain the process of global warming
the gases in the atmosphere act as an insulating layer, they absorb long wavelengths of radiation which have been emitted into space then re-emitted in all directions (including to earth), this then increases the earths temperature
what are the affects of global warming
- ice caps are melting which means sea-levels are rising
- storms are becoming more severe
- change in weather patterns
what are the three reasons for deforestation
- making space for buildings
- making space to grow crops
- mining
