Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
The study of how animals react to their environment
Species
One type of organism
Biotic factor
All parts of the environment are living.
Abiotic factors
All parts of the environment are non-living.
Habitat
The place where the organism lives
Population
All of the same species living in the same place.
Community
All the populations in the area live around the same place.
Ecosystem
A community of living things and non-living things.
Energy Pyramid
A diagram showing the level of the food chain.
Sun
Main source of energy for all living things.
Producer
Makes their own food (plants)
Photosynthesis
The process of food making in producers.
Consumer
An animal that eats the other animal.
Herbivore
An organism that only eats plants.
Carnivore
An organism that only eats meat.
Scavenger
An organism that eats dead organisms.
Omnivore
A organism that eats plants and meat.
Decomposer
A organism that breaks down dead plants and animals..
Food Chain
The transfer of energy to one organism to another.
Food Web
When different chains overlap
Competition
The contest within all organisms for surivavl.
Niche
The role a species has within their community.
Predator
An organism that kills other organisms for energy.
Prey
The animal that is the predators prey.
Limiting factors
An environmental factor that causes the population to decrease.
Symbiosis
A relationship where food, shelter, support or transportation is provided for one or both organism.
Natural selection.
The struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources.
