Ecology Flashcards
Condensation
The process by which water vapor in the air is changed into liquid water. This is crucial to the water cycle because it is responsible for forming clouds.
Photosynthesis
Plants use the sun’s energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into food (glucose) for long term storage
Cellular Respiration
The process of releasing energy by breaking down glucose and releasing H20 and CO2. All cells burn glucose to get energy
Population
A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
Autorophs
Producers
carbon cycle
the movement of carbon from the nonliving environment into living things and back
cellular respiration
Process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules by using oxygen
Anmonium
nitrogen-containing nutrients for plant growth.
Nitrogen
Essential for life are numerous organic compounds such as DNA, proteins, and chlorophyll uses this gas is prevalent in the atmosphere but plants and animals cannot use this form directly. It can only be consumed by other organisms or absorbed with the help of bacteria.
Biomass
the total mass of organisms at the tropic level
energy pyramid (10% rule)
for every trophic transfer after chemical energy, 10% of energy is lost with every trophic level; the other 90% is lost as waste heat
glucose
Plants use the energy of the sun to change water and carbon dioxide into a sugar
bacteria, phytoplankton, and algae
producers in the ocean
Transpiration
the process where plants absorb water through the roots and release it into the atmosphere. This regulates the temperature of the plant and provides water for photosynthesis. It also serves to move nutrients and sugars through the plant’s vascular tissues.
Biosphere
Consists of all life on Earth and all parts of the Earth in which life exists, including land, water, and the atmosphere.
