Ecology Flashcards
What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of relationships between plants, animals and their environment
What is the importance of ecology?
Provides info on how the world works and evidence of consequences of human interaction.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a group of organisms that interact with their environment.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is the place where an organism lives
What are examples of a habitat?
- Robin lives in a nest in a tree
- Rabbit lives in a burrow in the ground
- A blackberry plant in the hedgerow
What is a community?
A community is all the different plants and animals in an area
What animals are found in the grassland?
Foxes, rabbits, owls, grasses and trees are all found in grasslands
How do you study a grassland habitat?
- Make a map of the habitat
- Make a note of abiotic factors
- List the types of organisms
- Estimate the number of organisms in the habitat
- Write a report
What are abiotic factors?
Abiotic factors are non-living factors
What are biotic factors?
Living things: plants, animals and humans
What is adaptation?
It is any characteristic that improves an organisms chance of survival
What is competition in ecology?
It is the struggle between organisms for a resource that is in short supply
What is interdependence?
It is the way organisms rely on each other
