Eco-Warrior Flashcards
What does abiotic mean?
Non living
What is ‘lux’ a measurement of?
Light
What is a producer?
An organism that generates its own food and is eaten by other organisms. Eg, a plant
What is a herbivore?
An organism that only eats herbs (plants)
What is a carnivore?
An organism that only eats meat (other organisms)
What is a omnivore?
An organism that eats meat and plants
What is energy in terms of the food chain?
The fuel passed along the food chain
What is a consumer
An organism that eats other organisms
What is a decomposer?
An organism that turns dead organisms into soil and food for the producers
What does the sun do for plants?
Gives energy to plants so they can photosynthesise and grow
What is photosynthesis?
The process plants go through to turn the sun’s energy into food for itself
What is a pedator?
A threat to an organism
What is prey?
The food for a predator
What is a food chain?
A SINGLE chain of what eats in an ecosystem
What is a food web?
MULITIPLE food chains which show what eats what in an ecosystem
What are the 4 classes in the food chain?
- Producers
- 1st Order Consumers
- 2nd Order Consumers
- Decomposers
What is a pyramid of biomass?
A pyramid showing a food web that doesn’t show the actual amount of organisms in an ecosystem, but is made to look like a pyramid
[ fox ]
[ rabbit ]
[ Grass ]
What is a pyramid of numbers?
A pyramid of a food web that shows the actual amount of organisms in an ecosystem, even if it doesn’t look like a pyramid [ Snake ]
[ Possums ]
[ Trees ]
What parts are in a typical animal cell
Nucleus, cell membrane, and cytoplasm
What parts are in a typical plant cell?
Chloroplast, cell wall, cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus and vacuole
What is the function of the nucleus in cells?
It is the cell’s DNA and controlling body in the cell
What is the function of the cell membrane in cells?
Controls what goes in and out of the cell
What is the function of a cell wall in cells?
Supports the cell and privides structure
What is the function of cytoplasm in cells?
Holds and contains the organelles inside a cell
What is the function of chlorplast in cells?
Performs the process of photosynthesis
What is the function of the vacuole in cells?
Holds and contains nutrient and non-nutrient chemicals
What are the 2 classes in the ‘Classifaction key to life’
Prokaryotes (cells with no organelles)
Eukaryotes (cells with organelles)
What are the 2 types of prokaryotes?
Normal bacteria and Archae (weird bacteria)
What are the 3 types of eukaryotes?
Animals, plants and fungi
What are the 2 types of animals and fungi
Unicellular and multicellular organisms
What is the chain of organisms?
Cells ->tissues ->organs ->organ systems ->organism
What is the respiration equation?
Glucose+oxygen->carbon dioxide+water+energy
What are the reactants of the respiratory equation?
Glucose and oxygen (left of the arrow)
What are the products of the respiration equation?
Carbon dioxide, water and energy (right of the arrow)
What does biotic mean?
Living feature
