The moon passes through the lighter penumbral shadow of the earth. (can be mistaken as an irregular full moon)
Penumbral lunar eclipse
This also happens when the earth, moon, sun are not completely aligned.
Partial solar eclipse
When the moon is farther from the earth or when it is on its apogee, it appears smaller and does not completely cover the sun as seen from the earth.
