eclipses Flashcards
Shadow
Produced when an object blocks the light emitted from a source. The appearance
shadow depends on the type of source. An extended source as the Sun will produce a Shadow
with Umbra and Penumbra.
Umbra:
the darkest part of the shadow
Penumbra
the lighter shade surrounding the umbra.
Eclipse
happens when an astronomical object projects its shadow covering another astronomical object
Lunar Eclipse
Earth is between the Sun and the Moon
Earth’s shadow covers the Moon
Happens on Full Moon phase
Takes place nearly every 6 months
Its only visible in the side of Earth where is nighttime.
Can be Total, Partial, and Penumbral
Solar Eclipse:
The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun
Moon’s shadow covers a small region of the Earth
Only visible in the small region of the Earth covered
Happens only at New Moon Phases
Can be Total, Partial, and Annular
Source
The shape of the source affects the components of a shadow.
Total Lunar Eclipse
When the moon is completely submerged into Earth’s Umbra
Partial Lunar Eclipse
When only a portion of the moon is passing through the Umbra
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse
When the moon passes through Earth’s Umbra
Total Solar Eclipse
Happens in New Moon only. The Moon covers nearly all the sun while casting the Umbra into the Earth.
Partial Solar Eclipse
When the Moon covers only a portion of the Sun, due to misalignment
Annular Solar Eclipse
When the Moon is aligned with the Sun, but its at its farthest distance from the Earth, leaving an outer ring of the Sun visible.
Angular Size of the Moon
0 moon =2aractan Rmoon/Dmoon
Angular Size of the Sun
0 sun = 2arctan Rsun/Dsun
