Eclampsia Flashcards
When dose pre eclampsia occur?
After 20 weeks gestation and can occur up to 6 weeks post delivery
What are the new onset symptoms associated with pre-eclampsia?
Hypertension and proteinuria
What condition is defined as pre-eclampsia plus seizures?
Eclampsia
What is a key feature of pre-eclampsia related to the placenta?
An abnormal placenta with narrower vessels
What does poorly perfused placenta result in?
Release of pro-inflammatory proteins into the bloodstream
What are the consequences of pro-inflammatory proteins in the mother’s circulation?
Endothelial cell dysfunction leading to vasoconstriction and salt retention
What is the diagnostic criteria for hypertension in pre-eclampsia?
Systolic BP greater than 140 or diastolic over 90
What serious complications can high blood pressure lead to in pre-eclampsia?
Hemorrhagic stroke or placental abruption
What does endothelial damage lead to in the vasculature?
Formation of thrombi
What effect does endothelial injury have on vascular permeability?
Increased permeability leading to edema
What types of edema can result from endothelial injury?
Generalized, pulmonary, and cerebral edema
What leads to seizures and thus eclampsia in pre-eclampsia?
Cerebral edema
What is the primary treatment for pre-eclampsia?
Delivery of the fetus and placenta plus symptomatic management
