Eclampsia Flashcards
When dose pre eclampsia occur?
After 20 weeks gestation and can occur up to 6 weeks post delivery
What condition is defined as pre-eclampsia plus seizures?
Eclampsia
What is a key feature of pre-eclampsia related to the placenta?
An abnormal placenta with narrower vessels
What is the diagnostic criteria for hypertension in pre-eclampsia?
Systolic BP greater than 140 or diastolic over 90
What serious complications can high blood pressure lead to in pre-eclampsia?
Hemorrhagic stroke or placental abruption
What leads to seizures and thus eclampsia in pre-eclampsia?
Cerebral edema
What is the primary treatment for pre-eclampsia?
Delivery of the fetus and placenta plus symptomatic management
indications for out-of-scope magnesium
1.? eclampsia, seizure 20 w, no hx epilepsy
- pre-eclampsia. (headache/agitation + agitation) in patients more then 20 weeks
basic outline of the patho of pre eclampsia
he aetiology of pre-eclampsia is not well understood, but is thought to be caused by poor placental implantation and/or abnormalities of placental vessels. This leads to placental hypoperfusion, a systemic inflammatory response, and foetal growth restriction.
GI presentations of pre-eclampisa
nausea and vomiting and epigastric or abdominal pain.
cardiovascular sx of pre eclampsia
hypertension, haemolysis, vascular endothelial leak (causing oedema) and decreased plasma volume.
neuro ex of pre eclampsia
headache, visual disturbance, hyperreflexia and cerebral haemorrhage.
WFA diagnostic criteria for pre eclampsia
A systolic blood pressure of greater than 140 mmHg, and/or a diastolic blood pressure of greater than 90 mmHg, and
More than 20 weeks gestation, and
Proteinuria (protein in the urine).
