Echocardiography basics Flashcards
How should you position your patient?
Right lateral recumbency on table with hole or standing
What views are most important?
Right parasternal long axis
Right parasternal short axis
* Mushroom
* Fish mouth
* At level of Aorta
What can you see on Right parasternal long axis
Main LV and LA
Some RV and RA at top of screen
Mitral valve
LV should be bigger than LA
Right parasternal long axis
Transverse plane
At costocondral junction
Right parasternal short axis
Frontal plane
What can you see on mushroom view
LV with RV at the top of the screen
Which view is useful for LA:Ao ration?
Short axis at level of aorta
Should be <1:1.5
Which view is useful for LA:LV diameter?
Long axis view
LA should always be smaller
Which view is useful for ventricular wall thickness/diameter?
Long axis view
What is M-Mode and how is it useful?
Motion mode
Helps us see how much ventricle is contracting
What does doppler show?
Direction of flow of blood
Red - toward probe
Blue - away from probe
Turbulent flow = very colourful
- MVD
- PDA
- Stenotic valves
- VSDs
