Echocardiography Flashcards
TTE
Trans thoracic echocardiogram
TEE
Trans-esophageal echocardiogram
Which is used more often by ultrasound : A- mode or B- Mode ?
B Mode
Brightness indicates strength
M-Mode
Good For Valve Thickness and Timing
AKA “Ice Pick Mode” from one ultrasonic beam
2D Imaging
Typical View for Echo
Must get several views to make this quantitative
Pulsed Doppler
Good to show low flow
LVOT and Mitral Valve Inflow
Depth = CT/2
C- speed of sound
T- Time
THis eqution is equal to 77/T
Pulse Repetition Frequency
C/2D =77/d
Doppler Echocardiography is good for:
Determination of the jet velocity Calculation of jet gradients Calculation of valve areas Calculation of pressure gradients between cardiac chambers Diastolic function Color flow
Continous Doppler
Measures velocity along an entire line, good for high grade flow. MVS and MVR
Colored Doppler
Color scheme to show flow away and towards the transducer
General Indications for Echo
Evaluate shortness of breath/DOE Evaluate heart failure Evaluate murmurs Evaluate arrhythmias Evaluate hypotension/shock of unclear etiology
What can ultrasound be used to evaluate in the Left And Right Vetricles
EF Hypertrophy Restrictive, infiltrative, dilated, etc. Wall motion abnormalities Thrombus
What can ultrasound be used to evaluate in the Left & right atrium
Size
Thrombus (TEE)/mass
Evaluation of valvular abnormalities
All 4 valves Stenosis and regurgitation Prosthetic valve function Endocarditis Best done with TEE
